What is Multiple Sclerosis?

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a disease of the central nervous system that is often difficult to diagnose.  MS symptoms range from mildly irritating, such as a tingling sensation to totally disabling with little predictability in its progression.  Just as an electrical wire is coated with plastic, nerves are coated with myelin, which insulates and conducts messages between the brain, spinal cord, and the rest of the body.

When MS is present, the myelin is destroyed by the person’s own white blood cells causing inflammation, eventual scarring, and possible nerve destruction.  Thus the message is either partially or totally interrupted leading to one or more of the many symptoms of MS.

Common symptoms include but are not limited to: click on any of the items below for more info;

Muscle Weakness
Spasticity
Ataxia
Tremor
Speech Abnormalities
Vertigo
Pain
Cognitive Abnormalities
Fatigue
Bladder Dysfunction

More than 6,500 fellow Oregonians and their families live with MS.

Information gathered on above symptoms came from Thomas J. Copeland Jr. web site, which has the most extensive info about MS I've ever seen put together by a fellow MSer. Visit his web site for more on the above possible symptems and much, much more.
